“because there is a law such as gravity the universe can and will create itself from nothing“. So claimed Stephen Hawking in his book “The Grand Design”. I blogged on the book as I read through it but recently listen to wiser men than I discussing it.
Lennox points out that this headline “claim is contradictory at three levels”, He didn’t think he had met anything quite like it before.
1) The law of gravity and gravity are not nothing
2) Something cannot create itself. “It sounds to me like something out of Alice in Wonderland, it’s not science.” X cannot create X unless X already exists in which case it is already created and doesn’t need creating!
3) Don’t think he ever went on to talk about the third contradiction. They had talked about how a law cannot create anything so maybe that was it. A law describes how things are, rather than brings into being things that were not. So the existence of a law does not lead to the existence of something else.
