Apparently, this passage was read before Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the moon:
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 (ESV)
He took bread and wine and read this so that the first food and drink consumed on the moon was the bread and wine Jesus taught his disciples to take in remembrance of him. He said he might not do the same thing today though!
“I poured the wine into the chalice our church had given me. In the one-sixth gravity of the moon the wine curled slowly and gracefully up the side of the cup. It was interesting to think that the very first liquid ever poured on the moon, and the first food eaten there, were communion elements.”
