Every quarter of an hour the gospel is proclaimed through the chimes of Big Ben. The big bell tones on the hour but the chimes ring out every quarter hour and it turns out they play a tune based on the violin phrase from the melody “I know that my redeemer liveth” in Handel’s messiah. The notational words of the chime are an allusion to Psalm 37:23-24 and are written on a plaque on the wall of the clock room: “All through this hour, Lord be my guide, And by Thy power, No foot shall slide”.
So Big Ben, in its tune, declares the redemptive death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. The words cry out for his help, power and guidance in every step we take.
